My experience with hostpinnacle

I’ve been using hostpinnacle for the past five years now. I migrated here after my previous host (Which we will be looking at later in this article) could not accommodate more than three websites under one hosting plan. At this time, my agency and website portfolio were growing, and I needed to host all websites under one hosting account for easier management.

Hostpinnacle also offered the best server resources (It still does), which is very significant considering that I host traffic-intensive websites under one plan.

Hostpinnacle pros

  • Offers unlimited bandwidth, capability to host unlimited domains and subdomains in one account (The only hosting company in Kenya that offers this), unlimited emails, unlimited bandwidth, and more
  • Affordable – Most affordable hosting service provider in Kenya
  • No hidden charges
  • Fast – Uses LiteSpeed servers with high memory (RAM).
  • Offers free mpesa integration for e-commerce websites
  • Fast responding support
  • Free domain and website migration

Hostpinnacle cons

  • Support is not available at night

Truehosweb hosting

truehost web hosting company Kenya - dashboard

Truehost started operating in Kenya in 2016. My very first websites were hosted on their servers, but left for hostpinnacle due to reasons that I will address later in the article.

One thing that I still love about TrueHost is their support which is available 24/7/265. However, they have integrated a chatbot (Zola), which is not always helpful, but when it fails to address your issue, it transfers your ticket to available support assistants.

Safaricom web hosting

safaricom hosting

Safaricom is the only web hosting company in Kenya that has local servers. Having the hosting server located close to website visitors (In this case, Kenyan visitors accessing a website hosted in Kenya) is highly significant because it improves website loading speeds, which in turn gives a good user experience to visitors.

To be honest, Safaricom fails big time when it comes to web hosting. I have contacted their support several times and they take more than two days to respond, and sometimes they don’t respond at all.

Types of Web hosting services in Kenya

Choosing the best host for your website is an important decision when developing a website. Hosting plays a significant role in determining your website speed, security, scalability, and how much money you will need to have the server up and running per month or per year.

Here are the most common types of hosting services available in Kenya.

Shared hosting

This is the most common type of hosting service available in Kenya. Shared hosting is affordable since a number of websites share the same server resources, which are managed by the hosting service provider. A good example for this is an apartment complex shared by different tenants, with each tenant having their own apartment and only they have access.

Most websites in Kenya can run okay with shared hosting and upgrade as your traffic grows.

VPS Hosting

A VPS (virtual private server) offers more resources and control compared to shared hosting. For example, with a VPS, you can use Redis caching; however, this is also available in some shared hosting service providers. You can opt to manage the VPS by yourself or have it managed by your hosting services.

Dedicated WordPress hosting

WordPress hosting is optimized for hosting wordpress websites. The server is optimized for WordPress performance, auto updates, and security. Almost all hosting companies in Kenya are WordPress-ready. All you have to do is install wordpress through Softaculous and proceed with developing your WordPress website.

Factors to consider when choosing a hosting service provider

  • Price and value for money – Don’t just pay because they’re cheap. Consider, renewal fee (Some are highly discounted in the first year with over-the-roof renewal fees). You should also consider server resources, backups, the number of domains if you plan to host other websites under one plan, emails and more.
  • Customer support – Technical server issues can happen at any time. Your hosting services provider should always be on standby to assist you when you need their help.
  • Uptime – A host that’s always down is bad for business. Frequent downtime can lead to loss of traffic, revenue, and credibility. A good host should guarantee at least 99.9% uptime
  • Scalability and reliability – Check if your hosting company offers seamless upgrading options if you need to upgrade, in case your traffic grows and you need more server resources.
  • Security – A secure server i critical in prevention against DDoS and malware attacks. A good hosting company should offer SSL encryption, frequent backups in case things go south, DDoS protection, and malware scans to sniff out infected files.
  • Reviews – Consider company reviews. Be cautious since some companies play a dirty game by sending negative reviews to other competitors’ profiles on review sites to make them look bad.
  • Speed and performance – you don’t want a website that takes ages to load. A slow website is a hotbed for a bad user experience, which in turn affects SEO performance. Consider a host with modern servers and architecture, NVMe SSD storage, and local servers (In Kenya or Africa). If your host doesn’t have local servers, use a Content delivery network (CDN) like Cloudflare (Cloudflare has a free plan).
